Pirates Eat Cookies.
I'm babysitting for the next six days and I have to say that I am most certainly going to collapse from exhaustion by day three. Today I have a distinct memory of my looking at my watch at and thinking... dear God, it's only 10:30 am.
The funniest thing that happened today had to be my morning wake-up call in the form of a cheerful five year old. At 6 am, John stood beside my bed and asked me what time it was. I told him and he responded sadly, "Oh, my mom and dad like me to stay in bed until 7 o'clock. Will you tell me when it's 7:00?" I thought I was getting off easy as he padded off to his bed and I rolled over to snooze a bit more. Ten minutes later, I heard... "Carmyn? Is it 7:00 yet?" I explained it was not and he left once again. About ten minutes later the scene repeats until I suggest that at 6:30 it would be fine to play in his room and I could "rest" right here and when he was hungry for some breakfast we could go downstairs together. I think that happened at 7:00 am, wouldn't you know!
At any rate, we crammed lots of good stuff into the day and one of those things was making cookies. Yum.
My Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe
1 cup butter flavor Crisco
1 cup brown sugar (packed)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs well beaten
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
combine with an electric mixer
gradually add in
2 and 1/2 cups flour
then add 6-8 oz semi sweet chocolate chips
Bake for 8-9 minutes at 375 degrees or until lightly browned.

Crafty Storage

On Tuesday, I am beginning my summer knitting and crocheting group with high school kids. We'll see if any of them show up. I hope they do because it will be great motivation for me too.
I do have two works in progress that I am eager to pick up again and complete because then I can have the freedom to try some new patterns. More on those later.

Confessions of a Bad News Biker
Today I biked to UPS to pick up a package that they attempted to deliver earlier. It was great going there... 10 minutes... I was flying down the highway. Then on my way home, I discovered why. I turned the bike around and headed south into some fierce winds. The ride back took exactly twice as long and if I stopped pedaling even for a second, the bike stopped and I nearly tipped over. I could have walked faster than I was biking! Unbelievable. One might think I am making this up. But the sheer embarrassment I have over my ineptitude at bicycling is enough. I feel the need to confess, if nothing else, because I am hopeful it will get better. At least it didn't rain.

Fresh Air Blooms Fragrant....
I picked these today on my bike ride to the library. It sounds nice doesn't it? My bike ride to the library... a little relaxing jaunt on a Sunday afternoon. Truth. It was a frantic trek across town against the wind to return to films before the library closed at 5. The entire time I kept thinking, "I would really like bike riding if it wasn't so much work and so damn exhausting." I like the way it brings me closer to the world around me than I am when I am closed off in my car.
Last Wednesday when I took a day off, I made a discovery while walking. A field full of gophers. It was an unlikely sight and tried to take a picture or two. They are shy little guys. Here's the best I could do. How odd, that such a simple thing could make me feel such joy.

I'm Making No Promises

It's May. That must mean it's time to spend money on expensive electronic equipment... At least it seems that's been the trend. Last year it was the MP3 player... the year before I summer-splurged on a digital camera and a new laptop. Well, this one is the biggest risk of all. I bought a Schwinn 438 Elliptical. We all know how little I like exercising. Still I need to actually START doing daily cardio in order to make a difference for my cholesterol and for my "figure" (that sounds like such a Mary Tyler Moore word). I didn't agonize over this purchase like I did with the camera, yet I stressed some. In the end, I dragged my mom around for moral support and to bounce ideas off of.... and with the counsel of Marci's lovely sister-in-law, well, I took the plunge. It's a bit bigger than it seems in the picture and I'm intimidated by how it fills the space I chose for it... Still I've had it in my apartment for four hours and I've already used it for about 25 minutes. Woo Hoo.
Highlight of the day: Watching my mom try one of the ellipticals and proclaim she had sore calf muscles after a 30 second bout on the machine. "My gosh, this really works!" :)

Biking Beats Buying Gas

Tomorrow I plan to buy an unlimited bus pass, good for 31 days.... this is the best
My babysitting adventures were fun... I played tag at the park, read stories, played pictionary junior and more. With this family I am known as "Big Carmyn" .... the youngest in their family is Carmen too. I might start going by this everywhere... It has a certain ring to it! (tee hee)

Ways to Spend Money Without Even Trying
Oh my goodness. I could just cry with joy over the wonderful fabrics I found here. I discovered the link when I was checking out Emily's sewing projects on her Some Girls Wander site. I was actually looking for the cool knitting ribbon she used in one of her projects.
The ribbon reminded me of a mug featuring baseball pitches which I sent my pal Susan a few years back. I found the mug at Fish's Eddy and knew she'd love it.

Funny, now that I browse that site I can see a set of Alice in Wonderland plates I think Miss Emily from Inside a Black Apple might like. Of course, I do... loving all things Alice.

My War Against the Gas Pump
I put 8 gallons of a gas in my car about a week ago... one day after the price rose from 2.79 to 2.97 At first, I thought it was a mistake.... numbers simply inverted. It was not mistake. And so I gambled, thinking the price would go down and I'd fill my car then. The price went up and now I'm out of gas. Or darn close. I could break down and spend an unprecedented $3.04 a gallon on gas-- after all, it's only supposed to go up--or I could park the car and rebel.
I've always been a bit rebellious.
So, the car is parked and the bus pass purchased. I am boycotting buying gas until the price drops below $3.00. Let's see who caves first.

Fabric Frenzy
Hancock Fabrics closed up shop in our community and with that came big store closing sales. I bought some knitting stuff for me, and for students, to use.... and then I decided I might need some fun fabrics to play with whenever I decide to really break out the old sewing machine.
Here are some of those goodies:

A Fortune Collecting Journal
I save my Chinese fortune cookie fortunes. Usually, I tape them to my fridge. Here is a random sampling.

I hate the cookies, but I love the fortunes. And it turns out, others like me must exist. I've discovered a fortune collecting journal. I haven't written in it yet, but I can't wait.

Pocketful of Posy....
One way to recycle the denim pockets on old jeans. Cut the pocket right off and use it to display a gift or in this case to display a flower we each took home from a bridal shower I attended over the weekend.
Delicious.
Yesterday my mom and I shopped. I was looking for shoes that don't make my feet hurt. Flats. Sandals. Of course, I bought heels. So the search continues, though I think I've exhausted the shoe store possibilities in my town. Hmmmm....
I also bought a bit of clothing. And oddly enough everything I got was black and white. I was searching for color. But the only place I found it was in this wonderful cereal bowl I had to have. They only had one, but I couldn't resist. I am a sucker for a picture in the bottom of my bowl. It reminds me of eating dinner at Grandma's. She had some wonderful Wade porcelain dishes from Ireland that had pictures at the bottom and I longed to see that image. I guess if it motivates a child to finish her meal or a woman to splurge...... on cherry be-decked bowls. Available at Target.

Reading, Watching, Listening..... March & April in Review

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Teaching with the Brain in Mind by Eric Jensen
Farewell, My Lovely by Raymond Chandler
Childhood and Other Neighborhoods by Stuart Dybek
The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards
Books completed:
The Great Gatsby, a book I love, is one I was reading aloud to a student at school. Farewell My Lovely is a hard boiled detective novel featuring Philip Marlowe as the detective. I love this genre of books and this one was no disappointment. Instead, it was a refreshing read. It had very little sex, the violence wasn't graphic, and the writing and language made it a treat to read.

Books I started but still need to finish--thank goodness the month of May is "catch-up" month for my book club: Childhood and Other Neighborhoods is a collection of short stories I read because Stuart Dybek, the author was coming to a Writer's Conference at the university. He met with our group and I instantly liked all his writing better after meeting him. I AM eager to finish this book. Teaching with the Brain in Mind is a book I (mostly) read for our professional book group. The Memory Keeper's Daughter is one our book club read in April but I've only read about 50 pages. Since everyone was less than enthusiastic about it, I am more hesitant to pick it up... but I still plan to.
What I was watching in March & April
On TV
I decided to stop recording this list of TV watched programs because it never seemed to change but lately I find myself wanting to watch a LOT of TV. I am now sucked in to that stupid Bachelor show, once again. This time I am cheering for Tessa. She's really the only one I like. I absolutely adore The New Adventures of Old Christine and Two and a Half Men. I wish these shows weren't all on Mondays because I want to spread the joy out over the week. I am back to watching Dancing

The Lives of Others
I feel like it's been ages since I've watched a movie with all this yearbook stuff taking over my life, but it's only been three weeks. So technically these films were watched in March and the first half of April. Some I loved and some I could do without. Let me try to sum them up. From the bottom up.... I loved The Lives of Others which I saw in Minneapolis with my friend Rebecca. This one is a foreign film, which one the Oscar this year, and it's about life in former East Germany in the early 80's before the fall of the Berlin wall. A documentary I watched this past March is another one that focuses on secrets and surveilance. The U.S. versus John Lennon blew me away to think that the US Govt cared so much about the doings of one influential musician. I was impressed with the way Lennon used the media to convey his message and ultimately I thought it was a nice tribute to his life. The other foreign films I watched recently are The Curse of the Golden Flower--which wasn't all that great--Volver, The Science of Sleep, and Water. I loved Volver. I thought that Penelope Cruz, who typically annoys me, was terrific in this role and I'd highly recommend the film. It's set in modern day Spain and it is ultimately a family story of mother and daughters and sisters and it features the return of their dead mother. It's colorful, entertaining, and all around well done. The Science of Sleep was a strange French film that was mostly in English but it features Charlotte Gainsbourg as the neighbor the main character falls in love with.

Hollywoodland, Sherrybaby, Blood Diamond, and The Good Shepherd ar

I enjoyed all the other films I saw in March and April. Some more than others. The one I loved and adored was Stranger than Fiction. Will Ferrell plays Harold Crick, an IRS adjuster, who begins to hear voices... not just any old voices but a voice over narration of his life. It turns out someone is writing a novel about him (though she doesn't know he is real) and from there the fun begins. The cast includes Maggie Gylenhaal, Emma Thompson, and Dustin Hoffman. Every one of them delivers a kick ass performance. This is my favorite film of 2007 so far.
Other surprisingly good films were The Prestige and The Pursuit of Happyness, Crossing Delancey, and A Good Year. I would recommend any one of these. The Prestige has a wonderful surprise in this film and why shouldn't it? After all, it's about illusions and magic. The Illusionist, similar in theme, was another I watched and enjoyed, but it lacked the punch that The Prestige offers. Russell Crowe stars in A Good Year and it's about the property he inherits in France and how it transforms his life. The Pursuit of Hap
