Well, it's one louder, isn't it?

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

As Sweet as Candy.

Tonight I picked up a guitar stand. Apparently this is the gateway to actually playing my guitar! Instead of it hiding out in the other room tucked away in its case with clasps which clearly are just too much effort to open, I will be forced to acknowledge my guitar. Because it will be staring at me, begging to be played.

Of course, she's barely on the stand and already I'm mentally cheating on her. When I went to Scott's for my guitar supplies I saw these:

Yep. Multicolor ukuleles. Like candy. I literally had to flee the store to avoid buying one. I think I only managed to escape because I couldn't decide between the red one and the baby blue one. The sales clerk, not helping at all, suggested, "buy both." She was joking, I think. But those who know me well, know that it's a real possibility when faced with two great options. I'm a big fan of "buying both." :)

The brown one (second from the left) was $20 more and had a better sound, but really no ukulele has a "great sound" so I'm thinking cool color might be more my speed.

I have no idea how to play a ukulele, but something tells me that if I own one of these my coolness meter might go through the roof. Yep. I'm sorry guitar, you've got some competition.

Landslide a la Glee & Gwyneth

Only caught part of tonight's Glee but something tells me I'd love their cover of Joan Jett's "Do You Wanna Touch Me" too. "Kiss" by Prince was terrific as a tango and I loved "Landslide." Of course, I've always loved the song and there's not much to dislike if the cover is true and this one was.

"Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks caught wind of Paltrow’s cover, and she has a few words on her rendition and the impact of ‘Glee’ in general. “They did a great job,” Nicks says of the ‘Landslide’ performance. “Gwyneth sang it beautifully. Whether Natalie’s [Maines] singing it, or Gwyneth is singing it, or I’m singing it — everybody who has done it is very loyal to the original version and they don’t want to touch it — they don’t want to change it.”

Nicks continues, “I hope that seeing this song for those little 15, 16, 17-year-old kids that are watching this, they’ll go ‘Well, where did this song come from?’ Then this will go back from Gwyneth to ‘Glee,’ back to the Dixie Chicks … back to Fleetwood Mac. Then the music stays alive, and these great songs from the past that would otherwise be — unless you happen to be a big Stevie Nicks fan and come see me in concert — these songs are going to fade,” she says.
The songstress adds that ‘Glee’ plays an integral part in how music progresses, and that it holds a special place in her heart. “Everybody should show some interest in this show because this is important for where music goes in general,” she says."

Taken from this article. (If you are craving some Stevie, I posted about her last summer here.

I took my love and I took it down
Climbed a mountain and turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Till the landslide brought it down

Oh, mirror in the sky - What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
I don't know, I don't know

Well, I've been afraid of changin'
Because I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder, even children get older
And I'm getting older, too

So, take my love, take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide will bring it down
The landslide will bring it down

------
Yep, this song speaks to me. Sigh. Love it.

Winter Woes.

I am so over this weather--this winter. I was starting to believe we'd seen the last of the winter yuck and then I hit the highway for my trek across the state. Good lord.

Despite the fact that it was clear and snowing only very minimally, I-94 was a freakin' mess. It started out pretty well for 20 miles or so and then suddenly the fun was done. Top speeds for the next few hours were around 50 mph and mostly I was driving around 40. I am never too worried on slippery roads, especially in the daylight with good visibility. What does worry me is other drivers. There had to be at least six different accident clusters along the way. Near Fargo the true crazy drivers kicked it into high gear and as I was driving 35 I swear people were whipping by me at 60. I am fond of the high speeds too, and am not unwilling to pass others when it's warranted, but I can ASSURE you that no one should have been driving faster than 40. I now understand the 100 car pile-up near Fargo a few months ago. So winter, I think we are ready for you to go.

On a positive note, two signs of spring were sighted by Facebook friends this weekend.
1. The north-end Dairy Queen is now open.
2. Daffodils

I think I'd like to celebrate with a peanut buster parfait and a sweet little bouquet of flowers -- maybe if I buy into the hope, the weather will follow.
