The Current State of Affairs.

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

This song makes my heart hurt, physically hurt. It's such a painful song.

Gee, thanks, Carm.

I've been listening to music with a mind toward writing--how the composition process is much the same in both words and sounds--and I think that's why this song gets to me so much. You can *hear* the pain of missing someone.

sigh...

I love this song. Masterfully written and performed.

Yes, yes. yes. Sigh.

It is an incredible song, and I'm glad you reminded me of it. I really am, sad song or not.

This week I heard "Mr. Banker" by Lynyrd Skynyrd--the demo version that's on the boxed set. I was talking about it to my son--the music is very traditional blues with some embellishments, quite beautifully done.

But the music makes me prepare to laugh, and i'm not sure why, but it's not a funny song at all. It's about a son trying to get money to bury his father. So what in my musical expectations makes me want to laugh?

So I've gone back to listening to "Gimme Three Steps." It's easier, LOL!
